A Duathlon is an athletic event that consists of 3 sets of athletic activity but across 2 disciplines – RUNNING and CYLING.
The first set is RUNNING followed by CYCLING and then finishing with RUNNING – the distance for each discipline depends upon the event Triathlon Zimbabwe have on offer locally and would consist of –
FUN – 1.25KM RUN – 5KM CYCLE – 1.25KM RUN FIT/SUPERSPRINT – 1.25 KM RUN – 10KM CYCLE – 2.5KM RUN SPRINT – 2.5KM RUN – 20KM CYCLE – 5KM RUN ( * if there is demand – STANDARD – 5KM RUN – 40KM CYCLE – 10KM RUN
As with TRIATHLON, you will have to go through TRANSITION to change between disciplines.
The International Triathlon Union governs the sport internationally. The World Duathlon Championships are held on an annual basis and consist of a 10km run, 40km cycle and 5km run. At Elite level, the cycling is draft legal.
Although many athletes specialise in duathlon, the sport is also often used during the triathlon off-season by age-groupers and elites to improve their run speed and bike power. Events tend to be held in the spring or autumn so as not to clash with summer triathlon races, however for Africa this is reversed and events are held in the winter months.
